Nigeria has witnessed the emergence of this trend with artistes such as Flavour, Tonto Dikeh, Davido, Wizkid and so many others at the fore-front of this trend. On the International scene, artistes like Wyclef Jean are doing amazing exploits. Wyclef Jean’s newest venture Carnival World Music Group, has just raised an impressive $25 million in capital funding. The group seeks to democratize the global music marketplace for songwriters and producers in developing regions, whilst contributing to further empower dynamic women-owned businesses in the music industry.

However, this story is not about our home-grown superstars but focused on an International act Josh Clarke, a Canadian R&B brand name whose association with a Nigerian working on the set of one of his shoots made him look Nigeria’s way. Josh Clarke to some is just an artiste but to others he is an artiste with a heart of Gold. In June 2018, Josh Clarke and Kross-over Entertainment Group, Canada partnered with Brand Envoy Africa, a creative marketing and branding agency with a local office in Nigeria discreetly shared $10,000 dollars across 6 Orphanages in Nigeria. This event was triggered by stories from Josh’s Nigerian worker who would constantly regal him and the entire crew with the good, bad and ugly stories about the country in-between shoots. This made Josh take a deeper look at Nigeria and its amazing people.
The brand name “Josh” hopes to give African artistes the opportunity to cross-over into the Canadian market through collaborations that would proudly show-case their rich African ancestry. 50% of the proceeds from these collaborations will then go out to specific Motherless baby’s homes and other charity efforts in Nigeria and across other African countries. This will be provided through their partner agency in Africa.

The multi-talented Canadian r&b/pop artist out of Toronto, Ontario has been named as one of Canada’s next biggest artists from popular blog “City in Three”. Since childhood, Josh grew up in a musical family that made him create his own identity. From playing drums at Age 2 and learning to play the piano shortly afterwards, there is no doubt that his success and climb will not go unrecognized. Working daily with the music industry’s most talented musicians and producers, he released his first EP titled “24 Hours”. Josh’s style of music is cross-traditional in its feel as he hopes to connect the African, Asian and North American markets with his music.
Temple Obike, CEO of Brand Envoy Africa when interviewed said, “After the first round of discussions, I took a second look at his music and couldn’t help but notice a sound that was almost similar to what we hear out here in Nigeria, On meeting him, it became clear that his Caribbean and African roots were seeking expression through his songs. All I needed to establish was that this was a genuine initiative from Josh Clarke and his team to make positive inputs back to his roots before fully on-boarding. This is good for Nigeria and Africa in general.

Josh Clarke’s talent as an artiste is amazing and as we enjoy his music, we also know his heart for Africa is something that could be emulated by other artistes especially at a point where Africa’s potential is no longer in doubt. This venture would most likely open up investment opportunities for African musicians with the involvement of Kross-over Music Group and Global Trade Advisors who cater to the business side of his music.
